TJ was recently named by Niche as the Best Private High School in Missouri and was the only Missouri high school in the Top 100 Private High Schools in America. While we are obviously proud of the ranking, it only serves to reinforce our belief in our mission and tradition of academic excellence. Thomas Jefferson School offers extraordinary advantages for bright students of every background: a cosmopolitan, friendly community and a rigorous classical curriculum. For nearly 65 years, TJ’s program has emphasized no-nonsense depth in a required college-preparatory core: English, math, science, history, and both classical and modern languages. As a result, all graduates who entered by ninth grade have been trained in calculus and Greek. By senior year, all subjects are studied at the Advanced Placement level; most juniors take two AP classes. In an unparalleled year-round writing program—ancillary to Great Books seminars—teachers line-edit student précis, explications, and stylistic exercises. With a daily schedule of focused morning classes and a student/teacher ratio of 6:1, students enjoy generous individual attention, and supervised autonomy prepares them for the responsibility of college by allowing them to practice college life: appointments with teachers, study groups with peers, and afternoon tutorials. Day students share dorm space on a relaxed, park-like 20-acre campus with boarders from nine states and six countries. Five-day boarding is popular, even for some local families. The campus offers wireless Internet access, and new facilities (2009) enhance athletics and fine arts. Individualized college counseling led by the Head and senior faculty helps graduates go on to highly selective colleges. Average SAT scores consistently place TJ among the very top U.S. boarding schools. Over one-third of TJ’s families receive financial assistance.
